A few hours back, Elon Musk took to Twitter to proclaim that the social media platform was working on a software update that will show users their “true” account status. Enabling the reform will make users know if they have been shadowbanned or not. It will also give them an avenue to appeal.

A shadow ban, as such, refers to partially blocking or blacklisting a user’s profile to bring down visibility without their knowledge. Doing so usually leads to less engagement with the account.
Twitter has been enduring criticism from Free Press founder Bari Weiss, who has alleged that Elon Musk’s company has actively shadow-banned some accounts to “prevent disfavored tweets from trending.” She added,
“Twitter once had a mission “to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.” Along the way, barriers nevertheless were erected.”

Opining on the same, Dogecoin founder Billy Markus tweeted earlier today that it would be “interesting” when some people learned that they were not shadow banned, but just had deficit engagements because “they don’t say anything worth reading.”
